Elections for Lieutenant Governor Vacancies and Legislative Authority Over Salaries Amendment
Alabama · November 3, 2026
What this measure does
Require the office of lieutenant governor to be filled by election if a vacancy occurs more than 60 days before the next general election
A yes vote means
If a Lieutenant Governor position becomes vacant with more than 60 days until the next general election, a special election must be held so voters can pick the replacement.
A no vote means
The state can continue appointing someone to fill a vacant Lieutenant Governor position without holding an election, regardless of how much time remains before the next general election.
Simple explanation
Right now, if the Lieutenant Governor job opens up and there's enough time before the next election, someone gets appointed to fill it instead of letting voters choose. This measure says: if there's more than two months until the next election, voters should get to pick the new Lieutenant Governor themselves, just like they would for any other big election.
