Proposition 43
Proposition 43
California · November 3, 2026
What this measure does
Require two-thirds vote by electorate to enact, extend, or increase local special tax initiatives and prohibit local governments and ballot initiatives from enacting ad valorem property taxes except those authorized elsewhere in the state constitution
A yes vote means
Local governments would need a two-thirds vote from voters to create or increase special taxes, making it much harder to pass new local taxes.
A no vote means
Local governments can continue to create or increase special taxes with a simple majority vote from their communities.
Simple explanation
Right now, your city or county can create special taxes (like a tax for schools or parks) with a simple majority vote. This measure would require a two-thirds supermajority to pass any new or increased local taxes. It's like changing the rules so that instead of needing half the votes to pass a tax, you'd need two-thirds of voters to agree to it.
